Solar panels serving the environment

Solar panels serving the environment

The most commonly used energy sources today are non-renewable and harmful to the environment. Thanks to many actions and advertisement, the society is becoming more aware of this problem. However, if the good of the planet will not convince everyone, maybe the growing costs of coal, power or gas will do. Searching for alternate ways, you will find solar panels. It is worth taking a look at this solution, especially if you are going to build a house.

What are they?

Solar panels (also known as photovoltaic panels) are different from solar collectors in the way they convert the received radiation: the former generate electric power, while the latter generate heat. Photovoltaic panels do not have to be installed on a rooftop; it is enough to locate them at a plot of land near the house. However, what matters is their situation towards the sun: they should face it to utilize the radiation to the greatest extent possible. Therefore, it would be most favourable for them to face south and be inclined by about 30-40%. Another advantage of the photovoltaic system is that the excess of the generated electricity enters the network and you can utilize it any time (which may be a good solution in winters, when sunny days are scarce).

The operation of panels is based on the laws of physics; to put it simply, the light falls on two layers, which are negatively and positively charged, creating a direct current that is then converted in an inverter to alternate current commonly used in households.

Is it a good investment?

The installation of the entire system is costly but durable – the guaranteed efficiency is about twenty-five years (after that time, the panels will still be operational but less efficient, which is a natural thing). The investment should already pay off after 7-10 years, which will generate considerable savings in the household budget. With the current debates concerning the climate change and the ways to stem it, you can do a favour to the planet by using renewable energy –  this is the best investment in the future.
