Do you buy textiles with organic certificates?

Do you buy textiles with organic certificates?

Organic certification of textiles allow for recognizing whether your clothes are produced in a sustainable way, with care for the environment and respect for workers’ rights.  In the era of the so-called fast fashion and massive consumerism, we often forget about the ecological and ethical part of the manufacturing process. We buy too fast and too much, and many of our purchasing decisions are made at the spur of the moment.

It is worth to stop and think about the origin of textiles and clothing we intend to buy. Unfortunately, standard production is often a burden on the natural resources of the planet. It can be toxic and have a negative impact on health.

See what sings to look for to assess the quality and safety of textiles.

  • Global Organic Textiles Standard –  GOTS

Green eco-label given to products that include certified cotton fibres, are produced in harmony with the environment and with respect for workers. GOTS is divided into two types – “organic” (products consisting of minimum 95% certified organic fibres) and “made with (x%) organic” (minimum 75% of certified fibres). Textile and clothing manufacturers are obliged to adhere to strict guidelines during the entire product development process: from raw material acquisition, through control of chemicals in the dyeing process, to sewing, distribution and sales.

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100

This is a designation given to fabric manufacturers. It is granted by the International Association for Research and Development of Ecological Textiles Oeko-Tex. Fabrics don’t need to be made of organic cotton. However, the process can’t contaminate the environment and the material must be 100% safe for human health.

  • Fairtrade  and the Better Cotton Initiative

These designations guarantee that cotton was made while maintaining social and environmental standards. Of particular importance are: fair salaries, minimizing water consumption, reduction of emissions and the amount of pesticides.

Look for products with these labels to fight for our environment.
