Open composters
What’s the role and usability of compost in cities?
Citizens of every city, no matter how big or small, produce organic waste that can be transformed into natural compost. Statistically, 70% of waste made by people in households are biodegradable. In the age of zero waste ideal becoming more and more popular, cities are starting to provide open composters where every citizen can leave their kitchen rubbish, such as food leftovers or peels from fruits and vegetables.
Compost is a natural, organic fertilizer that can be used in the household and in the cityscape since it is a renewable and sufficient way to enrich the soil. Making people aware of this possibility promotes pro-ecological solutions, teaches how to properly run a household and increases knowledge about recycling.
Some cities publish easily available maps showing where to find open composter. Every citizen can use them for free. Composters are given by the city based on application and signed deal. All kinds of organic waste can end up in a composter, such as cut grass, faded flowers, twigs, leaves, even clean paper, hay, coffee grounds and food leftovers (fruits, vegetables, egg shells).
