Xeriscaping – sustainable gardening

How to enjoy greenery and save water?

Creating green spaces is meant to positively influence the environment. However, garden created by people can violate the gentle biological balance. The most endangered good is fresh water. Millions of gallons a year are meant for artificial irrigation of lawns. That’s how the idea of xeriscape came to life. It’s a way of designing and sustaining a garden that saves as much water as possible.

Xeriscaping (from Greek word “xeros” – dry) establishes that a garden should contain only species accustomed to the local climate. This increases the chance that rainwater is going to be enough to keep them in good condition. If alien species are brought to the landscape, it’s best to choose succulents – their meaty leaves magazine water. In the beginnings xeriscaping was used on territories that are dry most of the year but it quickly became practiced in regions with moderate climate.

Local plant species aren’t the only requirement for successful xeriscape. High quality soil is also an important factor. Forest litter and compost guarantee that water won’t evaporate. Trees with dense foliage will protect the soil from losing moisture.

Xeriscape style garden reduces water usage for about 50%-70%. It has a positive effect not only on the water reserves but also on savings in the wallet.
