City of green roofs
Place for greenery goes to a whole new level!
Most of the big cities have a problem with not enough greenery. The solution is forefend by dense buildings. Finding a place for a park or a garden is often impossible because of the infrastructure. While looking for space for trees, people started to look up.
Green roof is basically a roof that is permanently planted with greenery. They can be divided into two categories – the deciding factor is if they can be exploited by people. The first is a classic garden on a rooftop. Not only does it contribute to the better quality of air, but is also a place for leisure and recreation. The most famous example of that kind of garden in Poland is the Garden of the University of Warsaw Library.
If the roof cannot be used by people, it can be planted with drought-proof perennials. This measure has only ecological benefits. Construction requires special materials but the benefits are outstanding. Green roof helps with thermoregulation, meaning it prevents the building from overheating. What is more it keeps the rainwater which increases the level of humidity in the city.
Green roofs trend has become some kind of a necessity in the fight with climate change. In 2016, the government of Paris stated that they want to put greenery on over 1 million square meters of roofs and walls.
