Understand the rules of urban apiary
Understand the rules of urban apiary
Urban beekeeping emerges from the underground, supported by changes in the law. More and more bee hives cover the roofs of skyscrapers, and “urbanites” produce gallons of honey.
What to remember at the beginning of our journey with urban beekeeping?
1. No license is required to have a swarm, but cities may have their own resolutions regulating the principles of beekeeping.
2. Beekeeping is a way to relax and make a connection with nature, but also responsibility for living beings very valuable for the entire planet. It is worth to educate ourselves and establish the first apiary under the supervision of someone experienced. It is good to keep bees with friends, sharing duties and having fun together.
3. Establish apiaries near green areas, e.g. urban lawns or meadows. For the benefit of the entire ecosystem, parts of such areas should not be perfectly groomed. The vicinity of community gardens or vegetable gardens works for the benefit of all.
4. Why roofs are the perfect place for hives? They are sunny. Bees’ health requires avoidance of shadow, moisture, and strong wind. High above the ground, bees are at peace. Avoid roofs that accumulate heat, e.g. those covered with asphalt.
5. For safety, you should acquire a gentle queen bee. Other bees will mimic their mother, guaranteeing a calm swarm. Large distances between hives also have a positive impact on the mood of insects.
6. For the health of your bees, someone else’s bees, and wild swarms monitor their condition. Do not cross-breed your bees with exotic species – the lack of aggression builds positive PR and helps to promote this noble idea.
7. Do you have bees? Talk about it! Write blogs, invite the press, organize demonstrations of your apiary. Especially for children.
